Three Things to Check before Cloud Migration

Before you move a single workload to the cloud, check these 3 things.

Sometimes migrations donโ€™t happen as seamlessly as you would like. Not because of bad technology  but because of skipped groundwork.

Do you know what talks to what? Hidden dependencies between apps, databases, scheduled jobs, third party APIs, auth flows and services are often the cause of migration surprises. Map them before you move anything.

“Lift and shift” without optimisation can often mean “lift your on-prem costs and multiply them.” Run a realistic cloud cost estimate, including egress / data transfer fees, back up / disaster recovery, licensing and idle resource cost, before committing.

Cloud doesn’t inherit your on-prem security posture. Identify data classification requirements, access control policies and compliance obligations (GDPR, ISO 27001, etc.) now, not after go-live. Make sure your monitoring, logging, backups, IAM/access controls, recovery testing are tight before you press the big red migration button.

Migration is an opportunity to modernise. But only if you go in with eyes open.
